Decks, Portland area

Built on footings, not promises.

Decks are where Urban Edge started. Cedar, composite, hardwood and PVC, set on solid footings and framed to code, so the deck still feels solid years from now.

Six stages, in the order we build them. Most of what makes a deck last is done before the first board goes down.

Pick your boards

Cedar, composite, hardwood or PVC?

All four make a great deck. The difference is upkeep, how it ages and what it costs up front. Here's the honest version.

Western red cedar

The Northwest classic. Warm, light and naturally rot-resistant. Weathers to silver unless you seal it.

Questions

What people ask first.

Do I need a permit for a deck?

Higher decks and decks attached to the house usually do. Low, freestanding decks often don't. We check with your city and get the permit when it's needed.

Cedar or composite?

Cedar costs less up front and looks natural, but needs a stain every few years. Composite costs more and needs only washing. The board comparison above shows both side by side. Read more.

Can you put new boards on my old deck?

Yes, if the framing under it is still sound. We check it first. New boards over rotten joists would only hide the problem.

Can you put a cover over the deck?

Yes. Pergolas and patio covers are on our Outdoor Living site.
